About Alton

The Southern Shore
of Lake Winnipesaukee

Alton wraps around the southeastern tip of Lake Winnipesaukee, giving it one of the most iconic waterfront positions in the entire region. With 33 miles of shoreline and a year-round population of around 5,900 that swells to 15,000 in summer, it carries the energy of a true lake town without losing its grounded New England character.

Alton Bay is the heart of it all, a four-mile inlet at the southern end of the lake and the southernmost port of call for the M/S Mount Washington cruise ship. The village has a classic summer resort feel, with town docks, locally owned waterside restaurants, a town bandstand right on the water, and a community that genuinely embraces the season. Beyond the Bay, East Alton and West Alton offer more private waterfront estates with a quieter feel.

Inland, Mount Major rises to nearly 1,800 feet and is one of the most hiked peaks in the Lakes Region, with summit views of Winnipesaukee and the White Mountains that make the climb very much worth it. Merrymeeting Lake, Halfmoon Lake, and Sunset Lake provide additional waterfront options at varied price points throughout the town.

Alton Bay Village

The southernmost stop on the M/S Mount Washington cruise route. A classic resort village with town docks, waterside dining, a bandstand on the water, and a summer energy unlike anywhere else on the lake.

Mount Major

One of the most popular hikes in the region, rising to nearly 1,800 feet with panoramic views of Lake Winnipesaukee and the White Mountains. Trailheads are right in town.

Multiple Lakes

Beyond Winnipesaukee, Alton also has Merrymeeting Lake, Halfmoon Lake, and Sunset Lake, giving buyers a range of waterfront settings and price points within a single town.

Prospect Mountain High School

Students attend Alton Central Elementary and Prospect Mountain High School under SAU 72, a well-regarded school system serving Alton and neighboring Barnstead.
